I was not sure where to put this article so sorry if its in the wrong place !

I have today been on the phone to mr Kieth Taylor of Newcastle City Council Who after receiving my objection to the new parking controls being implemented in the City Centre has asked me to clarify my objections

My concerns are that the council has failed to provide either enough Rank space or any exception to Hackney drivers who are attempting to simply do their job. the “no stopping” rules which put in threat any driver who is illegally parked any in the city that is not a rank. i have asked the council what there plans are for these drivers or do they suggest they simply have to keep driving and play some kind of musical chairs while they burn their fuel

in typical LA response to back heel the problem to some one else or reply to my question that’s a different department. but when cornered by the question ” I ask of Newcastle city council as an advisory body to help us the trade resolve this problem” he simply said whats your answer.

well my answer is that for the brain’s and resources of the City council to resolve and that’s what they get paid for, helping and assisting the public and the businesses of the said city.

as tempers fraid a little he then starts advising me my objection may have been out of date by a couple of days !!!

its still an objection no matter what day to me !

anyway he is a chance for the trade to bandy together and get a result from the council in how to park your cars without prosecution! or should I Again take this fight on myself ?? even though i don’t work the street these days ?

copy of My objection to Newcastle City below hope it finds some support ?

thank you for taking my call today in regards to my objection to the new parking control policy,

while you said nothing was new, and the council was only clarifying things since the original implementation of parking controls in 1963 because the City has changed dramatically, I fully understand and take that on board.

My issue is as a owner of Newcastle Hackney carriages, licensed by yourselves, where do we go and legally park while we are to conduct the job as there is often prolonged waits between hires !

It is you the City Council that have licensed us and therefore I believe it is you that is required to help the trade without putting us under threat of being prosecuted for illegally parking.

It is also unreasonable to ask the industry to keep the cars moving in some form of musical chairs looking for a spaces on a ranks as this in neither cost affective nor good for the environment.

I simply ask Newcastle City Council to consider helping the hackney carriages industry by coming up with some solution by means of some provision for legal parking or exception for hackneys or adequate rank spaces for the number of licensed issued by yourselves.

Regards

Ian Shanks

Well i believe the sh£t will hit the fan in january in even worse quiet times than now!Whether you are Ph waiting on a booked job or a newky hack sitting parked off a rank. The police have been in jesmond for the last couple of weeks moving the hacks around like a pack of playing cards on a fri and sat night and it will get worse in jan when there is about 780 hacks viaing for about 200 rank spaces in the town centre, but there again i have forgotten how many rank spaces there are these days as they all seem to pe getting filtered away for new developments?
John dodds maybe you know how many rank spaces there actually are and if you do can you post it please.
Just remember lads this new parking control affects everyone whether Ph or Hack!!
