Ian Shanks BBC Radio Newcastle Interview

What about the practicalities:
Berwick said they will not act until the new unitary
authority of Northumberland is created next April.
Will the new authority want this hanging round their neck
when they have much more important integration issues
to contend with? I personally think they will wash their
hands and revoke/allow to expire the plates and badges.
They will be far too busy sorting out the unitary problems.
I think the fine/court costs also imposed on the losing party/parties will help make up the mind of either Berwick Council or the new unitary body. If they continued to do as they have done then Newcastle would simply go back to court!!
As Ian Shanks quite rightly said ‘it is a matter for Berwick if they
wish to revoke licences and badgeholders.’
So if they do revoke the plates then there is nothing that can be
done. All plates will have to be cancelled and vehicles will have to pass the relevant authority test. It’s a bit of a shambles if you have a black coloured vehicle though!!
I heard of one guy who has just put pen to paper on an 8 seater,
black VW, with a Berwick Plate. Unlucky or what?
As a proper and tested private hire licence holder in North
Tyneside, I cannot help feel that some people will have been given
false hopes when the lure of an easy badge was dangled in front
of them by Berwick Council. We can all say ‘well tough sh*t’
but the council should have taken proper advice and not allowed
this to get to where we are today.
On a side issue What about Newcastle Hacks who are working out of offices as private hire ops in North Tyneside? Will Newcastle revoke
their hackney licences as they see the new ruling?
It’s one of those ‘I told you so’ stories.
It was all bound to end in tears wasn’t it?

Newcastle Council and some of it’s Hacks are claiming victory, I can’t read or see where, but if so can we some evidence of it please ASAP, Christmas is coming and the NT & NC Boys and Girls could do with the extra Lolly!!!!!!!!!!

Mr Shanks.I have just listened to your first appearance on the radio.
What a f*cking arrogant b*st*rd you really are!!!!
You lost the case!!!!!
Take it like a man!!!
“It’s up to Berwick to decide what to do now”
You were a co-defendant in the case .It’s up to you aswell!!!!!
But just remember this .
YOU LOST,YOU LOST ,YOU LOST

At least Ian Shanks has the balls/decency to come on this site and air his views, unlike the Ginger Muppet from the coast.

Joe King!!
I agree with you about Mr Shanks, he is a regular on here and defends his interests unlike others.
Mr Shanks has taken a lot of abuse on here but comes back to justify, explain or even agree, I think he deserves some respect, because he is far from the only one who employs these “Out of Town Cars”, Graeme defended himself first on here, two operators out of how many????
Where is Mr Eastcoast, Mr Preston, Mr Direct, Mrs Blue Star, Mr Associated, Mr Lansdowne and the rest eh????, not one of them has even come on here to back Mr Shanks or us, or justified employing Berwick cars!!!

man of masses
If you are correct in saying i have lost then SO be it !i don’t win everything but i do try to do things and make changes for what i see might be the better for MY business, but from my sources i am not convinced you have seen the last of Berwick cars !
anyway as i have said in past entry’s is that blue line will simply head in another direction ! and the drivers of these cars will simply driver other cars so the main problem of flimping (if that’s what your issue is) will still exist. or what is your issue ?
but lets see if there are still Berwick cars here this time next year and see if you are then correct ?

Re: hiding behind false names.
DEKA, As long as people make sensible comments,
albeit, anonymously, there is nothing wrong with that.
I am a Blue Line driver, as you are, and I also value
the ability to work for them, as you do.
But there has to be somewhere where you can go to make
sensible comments on how you feel things really are.
Unfortunately some will abuse this and use it to make
insulting remarks or otherwise.
So as long as there is sensible, moderated debate, then
I don’t see any reason to publish my name on an open
forum.

Shanksy speaking of flimping you still haven’t came back to us about the Berwick Blue Line car I spotted flimping last week, surly with your “large modern office” with all your top of the range gps tracked data systems it shouldn’t take long to work out if he was flimping? Or was he and you wont own up to your drivers breaking the law?
I did think about call your office to complain as you suggested, but then I seen one of the blokes you said I needed to talk to (Tino) driving his Volvo (reg plate tino w) in town with his council plate in his back window, so not much point speaking to someone about operating to licensing rule with someone that doesn’t follow them himself, it no wonder your driver don’t give a shit if that’s the example your staff set them.

NOTE FROM ADMIN: Anyone trying to comment using foul and abusive language toward another user will not be permitted from now on. If you want to make a sensible comment or argument don’t spoil it by ‘effing & blinding’ just because you think no-one knows who you are! Everybody has a right to their say and this site will not discriminate because of where you work or what you drive but the insulting language is getting a bit out of hand. Cheers, Admin

John,
You should report the Berwick driver to the appropriate
licencing authority, in this case Berwick, derrrrrrr!
If the driver turns off his data unit then BLT can’t track
him, he could be making a cup of tea for all they know.
They are not the CIA, derrrrrrr!
As for the admin driver. Again it is for the relevant authority
to enforce the position of the plate on the vehicle – so contact them if you really want to kick bum. But get his
registration right first or otherwise you will
look a little stupid – derrrrrr!

Pandora!, I take it your female???, are you that Flimper with the Renault Megane by any chance, that likes a sly one in Whitley, if not then I apoligise!!
My point anyway!
I agree with ADMIN that using foul language and abuse is wrong, I feel it is wrong especially when these Numpties can’t put their real names to their comments!!!, I think Admin should do like a E-Bay type profile for everyone on here before they comment so we can “click” on them to see who we are talking too!!, we can still use our user name but have a Profile available, I don’t mean share our bank Pin Number!!!, but a FULL name and where you work and what License you drive under!!!, otherwise don’t come on here spout off behind a silly initial or user name, we all suppose to be Adults, but it is clear we can’t take a bit of banter!!
That’s my rant for the day!
Admin block these abusive Numpties because they won’t be on here next week, they are just rattled in case they loose their PRIZE possesion and achievement… A Berwick Badge!!!!!

Pandora, how do you know I haven’t reported the driver to the Berwick licensing department? I was simply asking Ian Shanks to back up his statement last we that if he would look into this last monday and if the driver was flimping the driver would be dealt with! and as for turning his data system off, would it not look a bit odd if he logged off at the time I stated and then logged back on 20 mins later? its not rocket science.
I also have the correct registration number for the admin driver Tino, T11 NOW, but as he has it illegally spaced in some sad attempt to say his name Tino Wilson (which he has in small case letter underneath just to make sure people know its his name) it just go’s to show not only dose he not adhere to his LA rules, he is also happy to break the law! maybe I should report him to the Police as well? or maybe you could wind your neck in and let Ian answer the question I ask HIM? after all Ian seems more then capable of speaking for himself

Ginger Muppet from the coast.HAHAHAHAHAHA

Appealing can be a costly decision.
The Court ruling – in the highest
court in the land outside the House
of Lords – becomes Judicial Law.
Very few cases end up in the House of Lords
because it undermines the High Court’s
integrity unless it is blatantly obvious
that a miscarriage has occured and the
judges were off their trolleys.
It doesn’t change the Law, but clarifies
or reaffirms the intentions of the original
Law – or sets a precedent – usually
based on a specific case – and this is
a test case – I think!
The buck has to stop somewhere -
you can’t keep running to the European Courts.
It’s also a matter for Berwick Council and
and they have their council tax payers to
consider – and I don’t think Mr S. will
be too keen to fork out any more than
he may or may not have done already.
You should expect Berwick will do the decent
thing shortly – and give in – they will want
a few days to make it look as if they
have considered their options -
its a dead horse/duck, whatever!

give me the reg and details to follow up and i shall do so but i will not have time to go through ever car on the bases of it was a red one !!! details please and i will get answers
ps ring tino and tell him your thoughts on the plate being in the back window0 !!!

we dont think there os a need to appeal ! as the judgement say simply MAY and this leaves this simply down to Berwick to make its choice in what it wants to do !!

blueline car 9: It’s a site for Taxi Drivers…The Banter goes both ways. Read the archives everyone has taken some stick. The Berwick thing is topical at the moment and as BLT has 75ish Berwick cars working from there it might be fair to say that BLT would be a ‘Talking Point’ Blueline was never mentioned here until Ian came on with some good stuff during the Court Case and it went from there. There has been some pretty abusive stuff from all sides and not just directed at BLT. I have 51 comments which have been disallowed or deleted due to abusive content. The site is a living thing and is so because of people like you who come here and say their piece, wether it’s one line or several Paragraphs. Blueline Taxis has had the following articles published here as Feature articles:

Blueline car 9!
Mr Shanks has been great on this site, he has stuck to what he believes in and challenged all his critics!, 10/10 to the man, where is the rest of the operators??
However some of your drivers have been winding folk up about their earnings, and I for one don’t think you should brag about your earnings on this kind of site, this is where the abuse came in, you don’t want “Factory worker Fred” to view this site and THINK you can make nearly £600 for three week days do you, because he will be at Harvey Combe as quick as you can say Flimp!!, and that’s another Driver to compete with!

Ian shanks
as you\’re a busy man to save you looking for my original post i\’ll copy and paste it here for
\”0:25am 29th Oct Blueline Berwick car number H1868 (VW tourran) flimped a fare from outside Mc Donalds on Granger st for 5 people going to walker. Now I no this to be correct because the people in question asked myself and another car “can you take us to Walker?” when asked if they booked they said “no mate” Yet your car who had been sitting there longer then me took them. I would also like to point out, your driver had no car top sign (as req) and instead of getting out and pulling up the seats in his boot, he had 4 people squash into the 3 rear seats! “investors in passenger safety” my arse!
*waits for the standard “it was a booked job” reply*\”

IMO Newcastle is claiming a clear victory to justify them risking public money by taken this case to the high court. But due to the fact the are only getting half the costs back proves it wasn’t a clear victory! wonder how happy the Newcastle tax payers would be if the true cost to them was made public?

the answer to your question is the driver was booked for a fare from that pick up point BUT was going to Jesmond and not walker !
i believe your storey, and funny enough only today a similar complaint has come in and it involves the same car and plate number !! this driver is being told that one more complaint and he will be leaving our company. we have a three strikes and out policy which he has now had two !! yours and today’s
many thanks

Dear stephen ive been at blueline for 8 yrs now and never taken 600 quid in 3 days . You should know by now taxidrivers like to fantisize about there earnings . I think it could be done if you worked 60 hrs in those 3 days { not ). As for your site mr admin i find it very interesting having only visited it in the last few weeks. Keep up the good work

and finally to Mr. Shanks,
you gave your run down of being in court over the three days, and each day gave us your 'opinion' of how the days events went.
well, my question is, just how did you manage that when you were not in court day 2 or 3, as a startled Ian Shanks gets caught out by a very well presented Mr. Savage.
if they were not your opinions then whose were they? and why tell people you were there on days 2 & 3 when Mr. Savage says otherwise? Hmmmmm ….

FAO Ian Shanks, 3 strikes and your out is far enough, but what about putting 4 people on 3 seats despite having enough seats? again I ask you “investors in passengers safety”?
But fair play to you for admitting your driver has flimpped, and maybe it will bring more complaints for you to investigate from other drivers, but this can only help your company by letting your lads know people know whats going on.
btw, I see Tino has now fixed his plate to his bumper. one down loads more to go!

I’m a central driver, and just for the record, if i were parked outside mcdonalds in town and was asked by a group to take them to jesmond or walker, i surely would. Because they would give me money. On the way i’d hand them all Cental cards in the hope they would become regular customers. Every man for himself, rules schmules. A well executed flimp is just too pleasurable for me to stop.

@ian shanks, i’m not saying its clever or funny, but it is reality. you drivers do it too, they have to in order to feed their kids. you have done more to hurt the hacks than i ever could sir. A well written GPS / SMS computer program would wipe you out in an instant. all that could save you is the good will and loyalty of your drivers. only then will you see that helping others to make good money too would have been a better long term strategy. hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha. enjoy it while you still have it

@ian shanks, I would just like to give out a big thank you to all the sh!thouses that flimped the ar$e off World Headquarters on Friday and Saturday night (Newcastle). Well done.
Top of the list is Ace with flag down after flag down taken directly outside the entrance. It was a very close call for second place, but my hat goes off to…..Lansdowne (Berwick plated vehicles of course) with numerous “pick ups” from the same drivers (very strange eh), and by no means last, but always there is…….(no prizes for guessing), yes your right…..it’s Blue Line (yes, same drivers again & again)….. A huge thank you for taking plently of legal work direct from our noses and I hope you didn’t get any trouble or runners.
Also noticed were the same (let me say….none English drivers) working outside the Fire Station and also the numerous Berwick lads still working on Grainger Street – Cheers again for making our weekend a total waste of time and I hope you all have a great Christmas. I’m sure my kids will certainly enjoy getting less this year.
…….keep to your legal jobs lads and stop taking the F’in P!ss out of us please….
(Finally, If anyone from Newcastle Council reads this – take your ar$e off your nice warm office chair and do your job – catch these thiefing barstewards.)
….glad thats off my chest.

@central parked, hi central parked, you posed a good question, re flimping, there is nothing in the usual places, i.e. wikipedia, thesaurus.com or dictionary.com. but i did manage to find this definition on some obscure website.
==============================================================
Literary usage of Flimping
Below you will find example usage of this term as found in modern and/or classical literature:
3. Revelations of Prison Life: With an Enquiry Into Prison Discipline and by George Laval Chesterton (1856)
“Some thieves are expert at snatching anything from the person, and this branch is termed flimping. A lady’s reticule, a gentleman’s watch, …”
============================================================
maybe it needs updating to read, ilegally pick-up a half pissed vunerable person/s and charge them a huge sum of money to get home, and maybe even steal their mobile phone or wallet or purse as well.

@joe king, eh???
1. i’ll charge less than a hack, that’s why we get approached so often
2. in what way am i more likely to steal a phone than a hack?
good research though. flimper = pick pocket. sounds fair, but the pockets we pick are from asian town hacks, not punters. thats not racist btw, i just recon that most town hacks are asian. is it true?
The views expressed in this site do not necessarily reflect the views of TooManyTaxis or the general U.K. Hackney Carriage Trade
Whilst it is true that the majority of drivers, and owners in Newcastle now are Asian, that does not give you the right to steal anyones living,be they Asian, white, black, yellow,or even mars.
There are a lot of us white lads still trying to scrape a living out of this mess, and idiots like you, personally I would ram you off the road.
I detest this sort of attitude that if the guy is Asian, hes fair game to take his work off him, there are good and bad on both sides, but the minority always get the publicity.
I`m a member of the U I T A in Town and we represent all licensed badge holders where ever they come from. One thing I will say to the `clown` who posted that comment,I dont know how old you are,(any advances on 2) but most of the Asian lads you seem to dislike so much, were born here in Newcastle, possibly been here longer than you have been on the planet.
So you are stealing my business,as well as theirs, which incidentally we pay license fees for.
Also,when we pick up,the public are INSURED,they aren`t in yours,(unless booked).
So `flimping` uninsured in the Town is your idea of giving the public a safe ride home is it. Just make sure when you have a bump, its not me you hit. I WILL SUE.
Take your apparently racist predjudices and do the cab trade a favour, take the next DFDS to Sweden, only jump off 60 miles out, then the RNLI wont have to rescue you. We only cover up to 50 miles off.

FLIMPING.
Just for the record, I would never flimp in NT since I see fellow drivers as brothers in arms there.
Last time I was picking up at central station I did not see anyone who looked like they could be my brother out of about 50 town hacks.
I hear so many horror stories about town hacks from my customers, I have no problem taking work from them.

I just hope that you get caught one day, sooner rather than later, and get everything you deserve!
Oohh, and if you ‘sit’ and wait for spennymores, then charge your ‘central’ rates, then why is it not better to work your office and do continuas work instead of waiting 30 to 60 mins between each job? Are you sure your not robbing?
and for the record, most ‘storys’ I hear from customers end up being that they never even got in a newcastle hackney carriage anyway!

@Andy Warhol, I’d never wait for a flimp, that would make no sence. It is an opportunists sport. It is bonus, not bread and butter since, of course, it cannot be relied upon. when is the next UITA meeting?
ACTION is needed, we need to conivince drivers that although by striking they may lose short term, but will gain long term. drivers are starting to warm to the chaos that will have to be cleaned up by the police with the bill falling on the civics doorstep.
afterall we have been LIED to continuasly, and enough is enough!

@Andy Warhol, Thanks fo asking Andy, the next meeting of the UITA is on tuesday 2nd December at approx 7pm..we have the use of the Labour Club from 7-9pm.
Cumbrian Graeme will be there along with myself and Terry Gorman,we need a GOOD attendance to decide what if any action we may take after the High court ruling and the apparent indifference of Newcastle council.
Should we not get the support we need,I think the whole matter will be dropped and Mr Shanks can have a free hand to take the Town over.
If you are reading this Mr Shanks,I believe the council are open to sensible offers to buy the Town out…….
Incidentally, and seriously..if any of the lads from North Tyne want to come….ur most welcome, any support over this issue can only help.

@Andy Warhol, do you think drivers will strike on a Saturday night? what percentage of drivers turn out for the “drive slow” earner this year?

Dear All!
Last week I announced that I would not be back on here due to the continous “Jibber Jabber” between the Blueline Boys, the offensive “one line” merchants and the “Berwickgate saga”, however due to some of the comments on here recently, I feel I would like to speak again…just a one off…don’t worry!
“central parked”…He has let the Central drivers down with his offensive comments, he has made us look like Rascist, Flimping weirdos that perform Sexual acts on fellow males in our Licensed vehicles while at work, I can assure I and 99.9% of the others are not like that!, I know there is the odd Flimp from some, but the rest of us work hard and provide a decent service to the customer regardless of what vehicle we drive!!!
Personally I have’nt got a clue who the Driver is, as I would name him and shame him to you all!!!, regardless of where he works!
I did ask him once on here to name himself, I can see why he did’nt, Is this why some hide behind user names????, dark secrets eh???
Anyway this Guy is bang out of order!
And some less serious../
BLT and proud of it, I agree about drivers being unfit, one Driver at a Whitley Bay office was caught with a Badge out of date by six months and no insurance and he is still @ the Office with a Berwick plate, so I agree that that all the Councils need to communicate.
School runs need a good shake up, regardless of a Drivers history, NT Council have many Medium size Merc Buses that are used for Day Centres, these Buses should be comissioned to be used for School Runs!. You get sick of seeing little “Biddy Men” in the mornings creaming the Council for Cash, filling the Bus full of Kids and getting little Canny Body down the Road to be the Escort, these lot get too much, they are they only well off Drivers at the moment!!
The Council should employ and screen their own Drivers with a Bus License and a employed Escort…If you are a Taxi Driver or PH, you should only be working the Office and Streets!!
Anyway that’s my rant for the Day!
I am off now…..Honestly
Regards
Stephen Arthur

@BIG SILVER,
Why don’t you stay away you idiot, just because you have discovered writing in small case, does’nt give you the right to call people names!
Why do you call yourself “BIG SILVER”, do have a small key part of your Anatomy?????, obviously much smaller than the one stuck on your forehead!!!!!!
Your spot on about one thing ….You are sad!!
Are you the other participant in the “Bl*w Job” saga????, with central parked, is that why HE had to go to the Gay Village, because BIG SILVER was actually VERY SMALL SILVER!!!!
Now I am off for good, I await your cowardly comments behind your silly billy small willy user name.
PS I love your comments, keep them coming LITTLE SILVER
Regards…this time please
Stephen

john dodds,
I have been passed a copy of the UITA flyer, so thank you anyway. I am dissapointed that No vehicles are displaying the time and date of the venue as they usually do. Several people I have spoken to did not know about it. We need to reach as many as possible.
I have also been explaining to people that they MUST attend and take advantage of the UITA incase no interest is drummed up, then the people involved also begin to think ‘whats the point’
I am also trying to stress that if we IGNORE the problem now, it might be that when people decide in a few years to come to take action, that it is to late!
SC – a strike, firstly to withdraw from the city centre for 1 hour on a saturday night to demonstrate just how many people are committed to strike, 500 cars ranked up outside the sity centre would certainly make the council sit up and take notice! dont you think?
I believe that there was around 150 people turn up for the drive slow, bearing in mind that there is around 780 hacks, for a last minute protest (I did not find out till the night before!) I do not believe that to be bad. Bearing in mind a LOT of people I spoke to who did not know about it, WOULD take part in the next protest.
Even if we can get a snowball effect, drumming up more interest each time, the council would HAVE to take notice.
MY only worry is that the meeting is being held a bit ‘low key’ (no distrespect to the organisers, who to date have done a great job) but had i not been to work yesterday i would have not known about this.
So, come on N/cle Hacks, lose a little bit now and take the time out to attend, and it could reap you rewards in the future!

@Andy Warhol, please give plenty of notice of a strike so i can milk the town from outside flares. thanks

@Andy Warhol, If you can get 500 cars to strike at a BUSY time on a Saturday night i’d be very impressed.

@Andy Warhol, thanks Andy,we can only ask drivers for their support, after all,Cumbrian Graeme and myself are feeling the same way…if we can`t get the drivers to help fight for their jobs,is there any real point in persueing this arguement any further.
As I said in 1 of my comments before, addressed to mr Shanks,I believe the city council could be persuaded to sell out to him,if the price is right…..the Town needs a good manager and new owner.
Before I get any Hate mail off United fans,I appologise for any offense in that statement…wasn`t having a go at NUFC.

@john,
the message I am getting from some of the lads is that as they dont have there ‘own’ car then they wont attend.
why dont people see that it benefits ALL in the HC trade? whether it being safegaurding or adding to the value of your plate, or making an extra £50 – £60 per would certainly take the strain off paying your bit!

@central parked is a wanker,
if its the same drivers where is your enforcement teams ? if its that blatant and that often it seems it must be so easy to catch them. don’t have a go at me as i am firmly against it !! and don’t say its berwick plated cars as its the drivers and they could be driving any car.
it seems the enforcement is the issue you need to be having a go at !!
