Transport chiefs want to ban taxi drivers from sounding their horns outside customers’ homes, but drivers say that could leave them vulnerable to violence. The restriction on private hire and Hackney carriage drivers is the latest in a raft of measures being considered to improve the image of the trade, including introducing dress and behaviour codes and more qualifications for drivers. But today cabbies said the move could put them in danger on some of Preston’s toughest estates, where they would rather stay in their car for personal safety. And one leading taxi operator even declared he would defy the “stupid” ban and refuse to get out of his taxi in some areas. It follows a number of attacks on taxi drivers in recent months, including one who was smashed in the face with a shovel and another who had liquid thrown into his face, burning his eyes. Mick Rooney, who runs Ribbleton Taxis, said: “All it’s doing is putting drivers’ safety at risk and making us an unnecessary target. “They want you to get out of your car and knock on people’s doors at night then, as you’re getting out, somebody comes out from behind a hedge with a baseball bat and robs you. It was only a fortnight ago I had to report to the police about a gang trying to car-jack me at the bottom of Chatsworth Street. “The job is getting more and more dangerous. As soon as you get out of the vehicle you’re at risk. I will continue sounding my horn – I’ll end up in court about it.” But he also said he had started carrying a flash lamp in his car which he shines into people’s homes to let them know he’s outside. And Charlie Oakes, chairman of the Bolton, Bury and Preston Hackney Carriage Association, said: “It’s getting very dangerous out there again and my advice to any driver is don’t get out of your vehicle. “If you’re in a neighbourhood you know is absolutely atrocious, I would support that but if you’re not in that sort of area, just get out of the car and go and knock on the door – it’s just a bit of customer service.” Mark Selley, secretary of Preston Hackney Carriage Association, said: “I wouldn’t advise drivers to pull up outside a house and automatically sound their horn. “You’ve got to put yourself in the position of the neighbours when somebody pulls up outside and does a couple of large blasts on the horn. If a driver’s got any doubts about his safety, maybe he wouldn’t choose to get out of the vehicle but that’s a minority of areas.” The suggestion to ban drivers hooting is part of the council’s draft Hackney Carriage and Private Hire Licensing Policy for 2009-2012, which is currently out for public consultation. Mike Thorpe, of Preston Council, said anyone breaking the rule would get written advice, followed by a written warning and then called before the taxi sub-committee.

To add to to this latest thing i would just like to say that i work nights and as far as I’m concerned if someone orders a taxi late on then they should either be at the door or window looking out for there taxi and i don’t mean standing on parade just keep an eye out for it that’s all i know the office i work for has the ring back facility on the data head so the customer know the taxi is there which is fine if it works but like most things sometimes it doesn’t

@the nutty professor, i do agree like my data unit half of callbacks dont work or work to late ian shanks customers get pi55ed off with call back as it is to late. when i am 3 miles into taking them home they get a text fron u sayin who i am then i break it to them they get charged 4 it aswell now it aint cheap to recive a text that half of pepole did not want what they want is there cab to take them home.
also ian shanks i gonna bring up a person who is more annoying than you in ure office he is caled flech yes we know the scruffy git he anoys customers,calltakers and drivers, he needs a bath and shats himself in the office. Rumor has it that you cant sack him as he has been written in the contract at blt he has a job for life. just let him take calls only as in i know at least 10 drivers that quit there shift when he is on the radio or dispatch. i dont want to hear his shat on the radio he is rude to every one he talks to. do dammage limataion just pay him his wages and tell him to stay at home, we know there is not a lot you can do about him but that i think is the best thing that you can do.

@mouse,
well mouse you seem to know more about things than i !
so do i need to comment or will it simply be another load of shit i speel out ??
the facts are call back is a low priority service as the highest is getting the jobs to the cars and if you understand how radio work you carnt do everything !! if the system has working to be given out it will do that first an queue up less important task until there is space and time to send it. Sorry out of my control oh and there is always the third part air provider that comes into the equation. don’t forget this is not a necessity service its a additional one to our main service.
as far a Steve goes the nonsense about written into contracts etc load of tosh. Steve has had and got issues from time to time as do drivers with him but he in 17 years have never been of sick and never let me down and even covered shifts at short notice. he may come across miserable and that’s because he is,but he treats every driver the same and has no favorites and never has. he is simply a hard working trustworthy (from my point of view) miserable person who has major mood issues. but not bad enough to sack him as he does not get on with some driver. i could also show you drivers who work with the office who don’t trouble the office for anything and don’t even know him.

if they are so concerned about drivers using the horn, why dont they just start to enforce the existing law, which states the horn is only to be used to warn other road users of danger! instead of wasting more public money on an investigation/review to justify their wages
