I was invited, along with some other North Tyne Hacks, to attend a meeting of the UITA in Newcastle tonight.
The meeting in my view was a good one with a reasonable turnout and a lot of good comments. There was a genuine feeling of unity amongst the drivers with the usual misgivings about the Council and it’s policies. I found a lot of parallels with our own situation in North Tyneside, in particular problems wiith Private Hire and out of town plates, lack of enforcement etc.
It’s evident that there are problems throughout the Taxi Trade. The majority of these problems are down to a gross lack of professional care from the people that take our money. Taxi drivers,in whatever guise, do their job, they convey the travelling public from A to B ,they pay their fees and do everything that is required by the authorities in order to carry out their jobs as Taxi Drivers. There has to be some reciprocation. Taxi drivers are not just a cash machine for the use of the Councils, they have a duty to organise & enforce, not just sit back and take the money. Like us they have to provide a service for the money they receive and that service goes something like this: They should Licence Hackney Carriages and provide Rank spaces for those Hackney Carriages in order for them to carry out their job in such a manner to benefit the public, They should provide adequate enforcement to deter non Hackney Carriages from interfering with the smooth operation of Hackney Carriages, again to benefit the public. Non of this is happening and in effect by not taking their own job seriously they are not only doing the taxi Trade a disservice but also the general public. The average punter must be confused. They no longer know what a Taxi is! There are cars parked all over the place purporting to be Taxis when they are not! People are charged different prices for the same journeys, they find themselves in a car where the driver has no idea where they are going and keeps asking for the ‘Postcode’ When I started Taxiing there where no ‘Sat Navs’ just the A to Z in the quiet times I read the A to Z and learnt my way around. There wasn’t Hundreds of Taxis and you were kept busy, you made a decent living and provided a 1st class service because you knew the quickest route to the destination, you didn’t sit around for hours waiting for a fare and soon got to know your way around better than any ‘Sat Nav’ . You weren’t hassled by the police or traffic wardens because you never sat still long enough.
It strikes me that there’s something a bit naughty about issuing Hundreds of taxi licences then painting double yellow lines all over the place and fining Taxi drivers for sitting in the City that issued their licence but did not provide enough Ranks to enable them to sit without fear of prosecution whilst executing their duties as a Licenced Taxi driver. I don’t know about Newcastle but my byelaws state that ‘if a Rank is full I should proceed to the next available Rank’ Well I think the City of Newcastle upon Tyne would Grind to a halt if every Taxi driver obeyed that rule in order not to be fined for sitting on double yellow lines.
In every walk of life there has to be give & take! it strikes me that the Councils just want to Take!

excellent post.
if used right, this could be a great tool for Hackney Drivers in our fights against our licencing authorities.
and thankyou for attending last night, and the stickers. lets now bring this site to the drivers attentions!

Great post. It’s good to see people getting together to sort things out.The Councils Do use us as a cash machine,it’s the way this whole country is going. They just look for ways to get more money out of us.It’s so blatant, issuing so many cars that they will have nowhere to park and then fine them for illegally parking.Somebody somewhere has got to see that this is not right. The Country’s in Recession and all they can do is find more ways to take our money. There’s something very wrong and I think more sites like this will pop up and start to rebel as time goes on!Keep up the good work I wish I could say or do something that would help!

Hi Again, just a quick reply to the above by John J I think it was….I too am a member of the UITA and would endorse everything John has said,as he says, when i started a few years ago,the only talk of `sat nav` was President Ron Reagan trying to justify the cost of his then `star wars `weapon to Congress and the Pentagon, that is now our `sat nav`.
have nothing against the system, used in the right place, its bloody good,BUT the driver should still have to have `Local Knowledge`.
Unfortunately, today, both drivers and owners are more intent on trying to out do each other for how much they can make in cash, rather than sticking together to get the `barmy army` at the council to do its job,a job WE pay them to do.
Until WE all stick together and say `enough is enough`,the LA`s will continue to treat us with the contempt they see us as deserving.
In a way WE do deserve it,as I have said in other posts, would Newcastle or for that matter North Tyne treat the London drivers the way they treat us?………I guarentee they wouldn`t have a job long if they tried.
Untill we all stick together and sort this mess out together,we will carry on stumbling from 1 problem to the next.
Incidentally, when I started,a Mr Watson was the enforcement at Northumberland Square office,if you were found to over charge,he just took your plate back…that was it.
The guy who owned Whitley Taxis, where I started sat you in a car, checked your driving out and you local knowledge….if you were ok….you had a job.
Not like a certain `dummy` who recently asked me how far up the West Road, Hadrian Lodge was, even had customers in the car from Yorkshire by their accents.
Turned out he wanted the Hadrian Lodge Hotel…….I was discusted with myself for not knowing it was in the west end of my own city….. I`m up before the Head in the morning……

Yet again Saturday night was a wash out as private hire & out of town hacks
from every borough including timbuktoo was blatantly flimping, they even have there own ranks on Granger st,Pilgrim st,Grey st, & best of all the Co-Op along from the gate & finally Gateshead Central ranks at the old fire station & Mcdonalds. While we’re on the subject of Gateshead central taxis I would just like to say a special thanks to the central silver Torneo driver who passed back a 6 seater job to me to the Travel Lodge northbound at Washington services after his attempt to get £60 out the lads from Leeds.I will be passing this info on to the council with the lads from Leeds
name & phone number.

On Friday and Saturday myself and staff from our office were on the street of Newcastle watching what was going on ! and i must admit it was not good to see what seemed to be a “free for all”
Blue Line today have dismissed 3 drivers who were caught bang to rights and a further two have been warned as we were not 100% sure
one of the drivers dismissed who drives a black Audi A6 was even unremorseful at his actions and fully admitted what he was doing !
and to our surprise he even told us he does it with the blessing of SOME of the Hacks ??? as when a job come to the hacks in the big market area that they don’t want they point that fare in the direction of this Audi A6 !!!
we will again do a further visits in the near future but i have to say some serious questions need to be asked to our LA over the clear lack of enforcement and the evident problems on the streets rendering the public they bleat on about uninsured by illegal plying for hire !

@ian shanks, Good on you Ian if this is all true as many private hire offices promote flimping by telling drivers to just phone in with the details to cover the drivers. Maybe this is where the L/A should start looking at but if you & the L/A are truly that bothered about stamping out flimping start by NAMING & SHAMING & why don’t you put a notice in all private hire car windows the size of the fare tables in Hacks stating that under no circumstance does you the customer have to pay for this journey as it was not prebooked from a office there for the driver will be worried if he’s paid at end of journey. I no it wont stamp it out totally but it’s a start. Or Better still why don’t the L/A look at what Birmingham Council have done to stamp out illegal Taxis & Flimping by private hire totally.

@NEWCASTLE HACK DRIVER,
i think the LA should be concerned about the public and their safety, yet they just seem to turn a blind eye or don’t believe it goes on !! Well it opened my eyes to the extent it is happening and the way its happening !!

@ian shanks, You still have not answered my request for naming & shaming or the notices In Private hire car windows to help prevent flimping in the 1st place.I think it’s easy 2 sit & knock L/A as this is just a game of PROPAGANDA against the L/A with you with the goal of getting world domination.IF you were that bothered about flimping Im sure you could do a lot more than trying to show up the L/A like stopping your cars from parking up in the city centre while waiting for jobs. How would you like me to sit outside your office with a load more Hacks or the Anson during the day taking your work.By having cars in the city centre your putting temptation in way. This never went on in the past.I dont steal off any one & I expect the same back.

@NEWCASTLE HACK DRIVER, I think we should give ian shanks a little leeway here.It seems to me he has took the initiative and seen for himself that there is a problem. Yes, maybe he is doing a bit of points scoring but he seems to have achieved more in a day than enforcement ever has. You’ve got to ask yourself,if you worked at Blueline and saw the risk of getting the Boot if caught flimping, would you risk it? Maybe I’m wrong but I’d rather see how things pan out before giving him anymore grief, easy for me to say I know.I don’t work in the City but we have our fair share of flimpers too so I just think this is a good starting point.

why you blaming me !! there were far more cars than mine out there and i do as much as i can to stop MY drivers doing it !
do you think one man can stop this ?????
The views expressed in this site do not necessarily reflect the views of TooManyTaxis or the general U.K. Hackney Carriage Trade@ian shanks, Its a long journey to come from berwick on a saturday night just to look at cars with no topsigns and plates stuck in the back window dont you think ?

@derwentside hack,
and your point is ???
why should they have to come from berwick ?
The views expressed in this site do not necessarily reflect the views of TooManyTaxis or the general U.K. Hackney Carriage Trade@Ian Shanks,
ian thats the biggest load of shit going, i regually work the market, and i can tell you that ALL the drivers do there best to chase the flimpers who continually pull up outside ameens and athena. the berwick BLT doblo (aisan lad) treid it only to FO by a aisan hack driver as he didnt have a job!!!
I can also tell you, white and aisan drivers regually chase hacks who refuse a job!!! and we all do our best to do our fair share of the short jobs aswell, altough theres always as you say a bad apple.
i can also catogoricly tell you that NO driver in the market (unsure of blu bambu) passes work to ANY PH car! and if he did so, he again would be told that he goes to the back of the que! But in the years I have been there i have NEVER seen this!
could that be the same audi i have just refered to in another post? the aisan lad on a derwentside plate?

@Andy Warhol, The Black AUDI A4 was flimping outside Blubambu at 6.30pm on sunday 21st right under the nose of hacks, i pulled alongside and shook my head couldnt stop as i had my fare in but he just smirked.
He really needs to be stopped ASAP

I still say the Newcastle based Private Hire & Bandits are worse than everyone else!, outside of Shearers on Saturday night a Toon PH got a job to Thirsk, the Lass asked me first, and I replied “No” and so did the BLT in front!, we were tempted but still refused.
A Toon based Bandit nicked my booking as well later on up there, these Guys don’t take a second glance, and finally a Toon Hack grabbed a fare from HSBC in Whitley Bay, blatantly despite three NT Hacks at Woollies.
Everyone had high expectations this weekend for genuine customers, however it was slow and did become a free for all, I was nearly tempted myself at 03.30am when I had only done £95 from afternoon, this was due to four of my jobs nicked in the Toon (The £11 set fares back to the coast), and Whitley being dead!!!
Roll on “Pay weekend” in February!!!!!!
If anyone wants to catch Flimpers, try St.James Park function entrance or Shearers! & Pizza Cottage in Whitley Bay…free for alls!
Regards
Stephen

I’d just like to say, well done Ian! how many operators would do that then admit it was his own drivers who were in the wrong? but you are right, the LA should get out of the comfy armchairs and do the job they get paid for

@BLT driver and proud of it,
i did see and witness far more but i am no position to do anything about that other than my own drivers !!
if i had the power i could of easily have caught 15+ in the areas we were !!!

It should be noted that the driver highlighted in Ian Shanks post was a Derwentside licensed driver

@Simzie2k2taxi, maybe it should also be highlighted that newcastle enforcement should instead of spending their overtime doing spot checks on their own cars……spend a bit more time catching the offenders, but there again the easy option sounds like good pay i suppose hmmmmmm

Lets give credit where credits due shall we, Mr shanks i applaud you for taking it upon yourself to actually go out on to the streets to see for yourself what sort of a mess the town is in and if any other PH operators have got the balls to follow suit then come on, lets show the LA that there is a problem with flimpers like we all no there is and put them to shame. Also Ian if you and your crew fancy taking a trip down to North Tyneside it would be much appreciated as i no some BLT like to flimp down there as well as other PH cars, many thanks…

all the licensing authorities have been notified but strangly Newcastle are the only LA that have failed to respond.
The have even failed to return subsiquent phone calls !!

ohh and ian,
I did not see this for myself but on ‘black friday’ i was told by a number of people i was picking up was that when the police left the rank to deal with an inccident, BLT and ABC were pulling in and picking up FROM THE RANK ITSELF!!!!!
i did not see this, but told on several occassions that IT WAS happening!
needless to say I advised all the passengers who asked if it was ok to get in them, if they did so not to pay the fare and wait for the police and tell the officers that they did NOT pre book this vehicle!!!

@NTH,
well i am not doing it for point scoring but thanks anyway !
i also accepted there was and is flimping but was very surprised to see the extent and blatantly of the drivers doing it !
certainly one of the drivers i dismissed was unperturbed by it as i feel he will continue making his living from the streets !(that’s the black Audi A6!) he had no value to his job with us , he simply said he would have to go to another office like five star or Ace etc and never once suggested he would stop !
nothing will stop this other than full time presence of enforcement on the streets making it difficult

@ian shanks, I agree with you Ian but going out to prove the LA cant do it’s job is not the only thing that can be done to stop this mess or are you hoping the LA give up trying to run the show in NEWCASTLE & N/T so you can have all that lovely revenuE as hacks would then be forced into offices just like whats happened in N/T DUE to peaple wanting more licenses released whEn there not enough work to go round.due to the actions of a irresponsible LA the drivers now have to work extremely long hours at the exspense of family life.the goverment & LA have so much to say about family values it PISSES ME OFF IT’S ALL ABOUT MONEY.
WHAT ABOUT THE NAME & SHAME & NOTICES IN YOUR CAR WINDOWS.

@ian shanks, If its a BLACK audi it obviousley isnt a local licenced car. I suppose to come from derwentside isnt to far but i have never heard of any enforcing going on in the town from this la
