Deregulation has led to too many taxis – and some don’t know where they’re going
I would urge anyone who doubts the implications of TooManyTaxis to view the video at this Link: View Video This Video is no longer available.
There are too many taxi drivers in Dublin, many of whom do not know their way around, a Dublin city transport committee has heard.
Since the introduction of deregulation, there are now more taxis than the city can cope with, the transportation and traffic strategic policy committee heard.
Cllr Deirdre Heney (Fianna Fail) said the amount of taxis in operation in the city is worrying, especially since taxi plates continue to be issued, even though they’ve reached saturation point.
“There seems to be a difficulty with the amount of taxi plates now being issued. I don’t know how we can curtail the number of plates,” she said.
Cllr Heney added that the huge number of taxis is contributing to the traffic jams around the city.
“There are too many taxis. Even from an environmental point of view, all the taxi ranks are full.
“Taxi men are getting hassled by the gardai and quite rightly so because they’re blocking the way because there’s nowhere else to park, and they’re wasting petrol.”
Cllr Heney added that it’s hard for taxi drivers to make ends meet now there are so many taxis in operation.
“It seems the guy who is driving a taxi as a full time job has his work cut out for him if he wants to make a decent wage, because anyone can buy a plate.
“There’s a lot of angst out there,” she added.
Cllr McCartan (Fine Gael) says: “Ireland now has 98 people per taxi, whereas in London it’s 300 and in Copenhagen it’s 280. There are too many taxis.”
He said a problem exists “if you look at how easy it is to get a taxi plate with “one stop taxi shops”.
He added that it’s worrying that some taxi drivers don’t know the whereabouts of their fare’s destination, and he said it’s not acceptable that drivers are relying on technology to guide them around the city.
Aggrieved
“There’s a definite query about the sat nav systems. It’s not satisfactory to me that someone should drive a taxi and not know their way around.”
“Now if people are seeking a taxi driver job, it wouldn’t be feasible,” he said referring to the number of taxis on the streets.
Cllr Dermot Lacey (Labour) said: “Those who argued against deregulation were right.
“Some taxi drivers don’t know the city,” he agreed.
“A lot of taxi drivers feel very aggrieved when they are moved on by the guards.”
Taxi Drivers – Boo Hoo!!! Just do your job!!
According to the Irish Examiner today, “THE same number of taxis operate in Dublin as in New York – but with only a fraction of the population to support business.”
This is according to the taxi drivers themselves in Dublin in order to try to reduce their numbers in order to protect their livelihood by screwing us consumers by removing choice and competition.
If there are 1million people in Dublin with 12,001 taxis, and there are 8million people in New York with 12,019 taxis, then why the hell is it impossible to get a taxi in Dublin at 2 or 3am in the morning.
We’ve all had the “Dublin Taxi Nightmare” experience – there are some nights when it’d be quicker to fly to New York just to be able to get into a taxi – it’d be a damn sight quicker than trying to get a taxi home in Dublin on a Saturday night.
Message to Dublin taxi drivers:
- because you don’t show up when you’re booked
- because you drive past people waiting at legitimate places waiting for a taxi
- because you pick and choose the ranks for fares that you think will make you the most money
- because you rip off people by going the long way around whenever you think you can get away with it
- and because you have ripped off 4 different recent visitors to Ireland working for my employer
… this is why you’re losing money and not getting any business. Your service sucks, and Dublin Bus can get me and my buddies home cheaper and quicker on a Friday and Saturday night – this is why you’re not getting any business.
Decision time, Minister Dempsey!
Well, it seems as though things have come to a head and a Major Taxi protest will take place on the morning of February 2nd, unless the Minister agrees to the recommendations made by the governments own Transport committee and offers a moritorium on the issueing of new taxi plates.
Calls for a protest began (I believe) in the taxi holding area of Dublin Airport and quickly spread through word of mouth around the ranks, I received an e-mail asking me to publicise it a little more during the week.
I believe the general public can see that there is an over-supply of taxis and that something needs to be done, if only to reduce the gridlock taxis cause in the inner city, 24/7, therefore the decision to cap,if the Minister does so, will not be an unpopular one.
Anyway, here are the details of the protest that I for one sincerely hope will not need to take place,
Are you listening Minister Dempsey?
Taxi Protest
Monday 8.30am 2 Feb 2009 Start in Parnell SQ, pass by the Dail proceeding to the Regulators Office.
Demands:
- Taxi regulator needs to acknowledge there are enough taxis and a moratorium should be put on licences.
- Government have to stop giving incentives encouraging people into business.
- Give incentives to keep drivers in the business
- Create more taxi ranks
Hopefully it won’t come to this, I believe the Minister will announce the moratorium in time to make this unnecessary.

funny that, i was taking a lad up the airport the other day. he was telling me that his father was a taxi driver in dublin (i know we can take what the punter says with a pince odf salt) but he said it was around 14,000 licences and that the drivers were really struggling to make money. he also said that they deregulated to give the nigerians plates to make a business. just what he was telling me like.
and admin, how about a bumped section, we can all post storys of runners or people who fail to pay incase they become regulars at it. Its just in this climate i think more people are taking a chance and if we had a section maybe it would give the drivers a for warning and maybe drum up more interest to the site.
theres one lass in the market around 19, for the last 2 weeks went to hadrian park, dark hair slim, average height, she done me of a tenner and another lad last friday for the full £13, over the rounabout at bewick park, first right, right agin, first left, 2 rows of houses overlooking a grass area,,, beware boys.

As a visitor to your country I must add that most New York cabs would not even contimplate picking up what I have seen coming out of Bars in Dublin. Irish Cabs drivers must be very patient because certainly most if not all the population in bars in Dublin on weekends would have to walk home in New York. Until I visited Ireland I have never seen people eat take aways in cabs. Why does everyone here feel the need to get legless, I mean not physically being able to walk.

Admin, could you tell me when these so called “new ranks” are going to appear ? I mean the ones we have beem promised like Whitley Bay (outside woolies) and the rest ? I work down the North Shields rank with yourself and the rest of the unfortunates and i am noticing a hell of a lot of new faces down there. As we are all trying to make a living out of this job it is becoming increasingly difficult to do so seeing as North Shields seems to be the only day time workable rank at the moment and times are even harder out there on the streets at night, we need something done and soon…

After seeing the link on the Dublin taxis posting I think every taxi driver should be shown this at there next taxi assotation meeting & copies of the film sent to all L/A before things get as bad as that in there own area of work.It just shows by deregulating taxis that its no good for any one Including the private hire driver as more drivers are forced in to offices & therefore forcing you to work longer hours.Allso by making it easier to get a Hackney carriage you encourage more part time drivers who in most cases don’t just work a few extra hours they work full time hours & more at both jobs. Me my self knows of 3 drivers all with full time jobs of which 1 is on the oil rigs 2 weeks & then taxis 2 weeks another does fire proofing working as far away as Africa & another does double glazing by day & taxis by night.& all have Berwick plates. This is dangerous for drivers & passengers alike. When it comes to taxi drivers getting parking tickets because they cant get on a rank due to the number of licences released by the L/A & not enough ranks spaces. Surely this is a case for the European courts of civil rights as they are taking money from drivers in parking fines after creating this situation & preventing them from making a living. The L/A want you to drive around providing a service to the public in a vehicle that’s kept to a high standard & could have cost as much as £30,000 to buy without being aloud to make a living to pay For it.
CAN SOMEONE TELL ME WHEN THE NEXT THE UITA MEETING IS & CAN THEY MAKE SURE THEY GIVE EVERY ONE AT LEAST 2 WEAKS NOTICE AS IM SICK OF HEARING THE EXCUSE I DID NOT NO THERE WAS ONE .THAT’S BULLSHIT.

well the new rumour to sweep the town is that newcastle will deregulate in 4 years time, as someone overheard an enforcement talking aboyt it …
… amazing isnt it, that they know there will be more work in 4 years, never mind a trade left, or even that lib dem’s will still be at newcastle, and why 1 year after they would be due to pay £xxx’s for a demand survey…
… taxi drivers make me laugh.

little knowledge is dangerous?? to ASSUME that Newcastle city council will deregulate in four years time….. I hope they are not making an ASS..of.U&ME.

@eagle-eye,
Maybe it’s the councils way of thinking it’s there only way to get cars back licensed with them and not out of the area ???

@ian shanks,
but ian, i thought that people did this to SAVE money or they were not HAPPY with the service,,, why would these people come crawling back if Newcastle deregulated Ian?
and ian just confirm for me whether or not to operate a booking desk you would need an operators licence.

@andy warhol,
it is my understanding if you are on private land and have the permission of the land owner the enforcement teams have no powers ?
i had this issue at DFDS and it was resolved by the fact that DFDS have a good working relationship with the local authority and did not want to upset them so it was agreed they could do what ever checks they wanted on this land as we had nothing to hide anyway !
i would be happy to stay in Newcastle or north tyneside if they were not so dictatorial or obstructive and provided a service and not treat us like second rate citizens, and they would listen to the trades input on things
i have suggested that selected operators should participate in commitee meetings as advisory’s, but the poo poo it.

@Ian shanks, you go on about how the local LA treat the driver, but you and your company treat your driver exactly the same! you never take the opinion of the average driver on board when coming up with company policy or new pulling rules, you never think of how a drivers income is going to be effected when taken on more and more drivers or how the customers are going to react when getting an unskilled (I say unskilled because knowing the best way around an area is a skill) plus the attitude that drivers get of the “management team” is like it or lump it! the same attitude the LA’s give us!

To that comment, concerning deregulation again in Newcastle i would just say this….lets worry about things that are currently happening and cross the deregulation bridge again,if and when we have to. Also, don`t put ideas into peoples heads,we all know how loose talk in government circles hasd a habit of returning to bite people.

@andy warhol, when I started in the Taxi business there were around 250 Hacks in newcastle,I think since then they have Deregulated and Reregulated,Any further issues of Taxis would be a nightmare for the LA let alone the trade and I would think that they realise this as they have eyes and can see the overcrowding that exists on the streets now.

the taxi business went to the grave three years ago, after the 31st december 2006 no more plates should have been given out at all.is it any wonder why people cant get a taxi home at that hour of the morning some of the shit that is standing waiting for a cab is unreal i would rather sit in all the lovely dublin traffic than pick up god knows what at that hour.watch out for travellers lads i was done last summer up in cabra.only for a screen i would have been brown bread.
