call the police 0191 2146555, inform them of the law that is being broken, request a log number, then follow it up the next day by calling them and ask what action was taken, if you’re not happy with what was done, lodge a complaint. Then next time do the same, they will start taking action, as the complaints get logged nationally. What happened to the promise by the police at the UITA meeting last year from the police officer that was put in charge of dealing with the taxi drivers after last years protest? |

They said they would teach the police in the city centre some of the laws to do with licensing IE the difference between a N/H & a private hire or a bandit as they admitted then they were not totally genned up to do with the law of taxi licensing? As you can see from these 2 photos they clearly still do not know as this east coast taxi would be moved on instead of being plotted in while parked up on the pavement out side the central arcade while waiting for a job. They also have the cheek to ticket taxis that can’t get on ranks when on Friday night Taxis had to juggle around these 2 cars for 3 hours while the owners enjoyed a meal on pilgrim st .You can clearly see it’s a taxi rank but these drivers know they don’t have to pay for parking & that they never get a parking ticket so they carry on doing it every week. |

The short answer to your comment is that the police have to meet Government targets, each month, and our problems come a very poor 3rd to the supposed knife crimes and burgluries. Thats the official line as I have been told.
My reply,to a certain officer that I know, was that as long as the streets are cleared as quickly as possible, which from their perspective means less trouble and the like, they don`t give a toss if the car is licensed or insured,as long as the passengers are away home and most of the time the plod get a quieter shift.
After all,as 1 plod told me on saturday night,we are all the same,a `taxi` is a taxi,no matter where it is from.

why only some of the laws? why not all of them? or do that hacks not want the police to be told about how they cant stop out side of any old bars and ply for hire? Or how if a rank is full they must move on to the next rank rather then just que to get on the rank?
Selective enforcemnet springs to mind

@SC, If where Hacks parked or did not park had some kind of economic effect on Private Hire I could understand Private Hire commenting on it,in the same way that Hacks complain about Private Hire Parking, but the justification for those complaints is that Private Hire parking and where they park can and does have an economic effect on the operations of Hackney carriages,as it has been pointed out on here more than once in North Tynesides’ “non zoning policy” it was rejected by NT Licensing committee “as the zoning policy may have a detrimental effect on the operations of Hackney Carriages” those words were a true insight into the future and became true due to the incompetence of Licensing officers entrusted with the upholding of Licensing Committee decisions.Private Hire are despatched to and pick up their Fares, impeded in no way whatsoever by Hackney Carriages, all the H/C Trade asks for is for the same in return,it matters not,to Private Hire, where a Hack parks as it does not stop or impede the Private Hire from working but it does matter where P/H park as this has the potential of restricting a H/C’s Trade.

@l90,
Last night on BBC2 was a programme all about Microsoft Owner Bill Gates and how his company cornered the marketplace in the computer industry by getting Microsoft into every computer and getting a computer in every household and after watching the programme it really hit home, how once a company becomes a certain size there is little anyone can do to stop it, after all even the United States Government thought Microsoft were to commanding in the computer industry, but were unable to stop them.
(Alan Sugar even admitted he was wrong not to see software as being so important to the computers he was building when he first started AMSTRAD)
My point being Blueline have marketed there telephone number over the years to such a point most people have it in there mobile phone and so to think a reduction in price will affect Blueline is a none starter, because only a lack of available vehicles at Blueline can now stop any expansion Mr Shanks has planned for the future with his new Newcastle Private Hire Operators Licence he has told us he has applied for should it be granted that is.
As you stated, unhappy drivers at walker taxis will be the only outcome by reducing the tariff down from whatever the tariff was reduced from. Any attempt to try to increase the rate back up to the old rate will only drive customers away because they will see it as an increase and not just a return to the old level when the price goes up in the future.
The drivers may even decide to leave walker taxis and work for another office that has better rates, as all the customer really cares about is having a clean vehicle with a reliable driver that turns up on time and provides good service, because good service, not price, is what really matters in business after all, do you get repeat business if you get a passenger to their destination late? I think not!!!
I am sorry if some people think I am changing my Hackney Carriage opinion, but I am just being a realist and living in the real world!
Take Care All

S,C If the hacks drove from rank to rank & found we could get on one then we would be up for that, but as there are to many Taxis for the rank spaces in Newcastle & every city in this country then we have to work with what we have. But it does not help when private cars park on them.If you can come up with any better ideas then there most welcome but untill where all flying helicopters there not much we can do.

I am only pointing out that the hacks are very quick to want everybody else to work to the letter of the law, yet when the question of them doing the same is asked its a diffrent story (or excuse why they dont). For the record, i agree that the rank situation is bad and needs to be addressed, but if you are asking the police,LA’s and PH to follow the law, then the hacks must be prepaired to do the same.

@SC, I refer to my previous comment and add the following: HC have no other ‘Legal’ recourse but the Law.Would you have them be silent? to watch and do nothing as PH and private cars park on their Ranks or form illegal Ranks of their own in places likely to attract the publics attention.I see your point but don’t see why you are making it,HC’s illegal parking does not affect you in the least. To stop PH doing this will enhance HC earnings,Stopping HC from Illegal parking cannot possibly enhance PH earnings. The PH operator makes provision for PH cars and the Council makes provision for HC. You seem to propose, for no apparent reason other than “your saying it So we will too”,that 900 HC should just drive around and around looking for a Rank space when the Council has not actually made adequate provision for this many cars. I think if that were to happen you might find PH operations impeded by the extra traffic and then you might have a point. The councils’ poor provision results in HC’s getting parking tickets whilst HC’s watch Private cars & PH park where they like without fear of prosecution. HC accept the fact they are illegally parked and accept the tickets.Do you think PH should be exempt?

@Admin, the point I am making is you can’t just ask for some laws to be enforced. If the Police start to take a more active enforcement of the law, then as HC’s you have a hard time making money, in previous post on this site hack are complaining about being moved on down the coast for not being on ranks, this will only get worse for you. Maybe they should do what they tried in Sunderland the other year, where all cars are band from the city center and hacks have one pick up point and PH has another?
As for the hacks having no other legal recourse, your wrong, you have the same legal recourse as every other member of the public, if you see cars parked in ranks, rather then sitting moaning about it, call the police 0191 2146555, inform them of the law that is being broken, request a log number, then follow it up the next day by calling them and ask what action was taken, if you’re not happy with what was done, lodge a complaint. Then next time do the same, they will start taken action, as the complaints get logged nationally.

@SC, Thanks for that mate but in giving us the advice to ring the police you’re stating my point, which is: our only recourse is the law, calling the police is ‘using the law’
