Stand United!

Here’s the Comment of the week and it says it all:
I’m a Newcastle PH driver and the lack of rank space is also affecting me because we are all (Hack and PH) fighting for space to park so we can do our jobs. So why don’t we all fight back by parking all of our vehicle in the civic centre car park and surrounding area only leaving them 2 spaces to fight over and then we can tell them “IF YOU CAN’T FIND A SPACE GO HOME”. They don’t seem to realise that the influx of out of town plates has already made our jobs harder without now kicking us all in the nuts when were already down. So forget what colour badge you’ve got and stand united.

Too many Hacks, Too many Private Hire & Too many Out of Town plates! Where does it end? No space to Rank for the Hacks, not just in the City but in all the Boroughs, Newcastle, NorthTyneside, Gateshead etc; etc. First off why the great need for an out of town plated car? I don’t buy into the saving money crap; it’s been said before you will be lucky to save £2 per week! That does not justify the mess that out of town cars contribute to the mess we are already in. There are enough Private Hire to do the job, There are enough Hacks to do their job, none of us in the trade as a whole need any more, The public doesn’t need any more you only have to read the JMP report to see that the Taxi & Private Hire trade across Tyne & Wear have been recognised as doing an excellent job in Public Transport. We do an excellent job and we should be proud of that fact and proud of the recognition received through this report. More importantly the LA’s need to recognise and take pride in the Taxis & Private Hire that they licence. They can show this by listening to the trade, by working with the trade instead of saying “Go Home if You Can’t Get Parked”
Private Hire! Why would you or why should you work alongside someone who takes a side door into the trade when you have entered the trade in the correct manner. Even if they are mates of yours why should you let your slice of the pie get smaller because someone else is a cheapskate? Stand together! Stand up and say to your operator, your Local authority or even your mate who drives a Berwick plated car “Err we don’t actually like this!” Of course if you haven’t really thought about it you probably think you don’t care but you should care because every extra car, especially now, that comes on the street or joins your circuit is COSTING YOU MONEY! I know some of you believe this now more than you did last year. Everybody’s takings are down over the last twelve months and if they are not you’re either telling porkies or you’re working more hours.

I have read the comments that say “But you just have to adapt” or “I work a professionally run office and make £2,000 per week” well great! Keep kidding yourself because you aint kidding the rest of us! This is not about Hacks & Private Hire. It’s about keeping the standard of living you have become used to in order to keep paying the bills and feed your family. This Country used to like hard workers and everyone I know IS a hard worker but the fashion seems to be, increase the workforce, more licences more revenue! This is not a just reward for hard work and the people in power would do well to realise this and show some recognition of a job well done by thousands of Taxis & Private Hire across Tyneside each and every day of the year!
Read this twice, read it three times and start talking about it but talk to the people that matter, talk to the people who need convincing!

Reference to Article entitled: Stand United!
Good Article, but the most damage has been done to the North Tyneside Lads and Lasses, I am sorry to offend but I have much more sympathy for my Comrades at the Coast than you lot in Town!, just before any Toon Driver gets his Handbag out to hit me, lets take a look at the state of North Tyneside compared to Newcastle!
What has North Tyneside got to offer for a Hackney Carriage?
Well you have the ever declining Rank at North Shields Metro, within a close distance of a PH Offices,
No Nightlife Monday to Wednesday
Thursday night is cheap Drinks night in Whitley Bay (What’s left of Whitley Bay), average age of Punter “17 years old”, they mostly get picked up by their mates in a Citreon Saxo or Mummy or Daddy pick them up, OR they live in Monkseaton, so that’s Thursday non-existent!
Friday!..wooohooo, I think everyone has forgot that Friday night can be a night out, touch & go if you make a few Bob
Saturday, Oh yes Toon Boys it may look Busy, but 70% of Punters from March to November are Stag & Hen Parties, get hammered Downstairs in the Hotel and go back upstairs to sleep!, because they are all Yorkies or Scousers!
Sunday, Tynemouth, Hack que around the Priory awaiting fantastic Jobs back to North Shields!
One Hospital, serviced by one PH Firm
So 800+ PH Cars, 200 Hacks and Dozens of Bandits to cover this great demand!
All Good for us eh..
AND NOW WHAT ABOUT NEWCASTLE EH?????
The Gate!!, Mosley Street, Bigg Market, Quayside, The Arena when their is a concert on, The Carling Academy, City Hall, The General town Centre Bars, all with a strong Nightlife due to……….
50,000 Students who like their Beer (Term Time)
Newcastle as a developed City, various Tourists
Two large specialist Universities, meaning Med, Dentistry, Teaching and Nursing Schools that have Students all year round..who like their Beer.
Three very large Top Hospitals where Patients come from far and wide for Appts and treatment.
Newcastle United, Hmmm 52,000 fans wanting to go home on match day??, oh yes NT boys are the same eh? Whitley Bay FC, 200 Fans!!
Eastcoast Mainline Train Station, oh yes we have North Shields Metro!
Various large Hotels
Smaller PH Offices than NT
Jesmond one mile away…say no more
Huge Student infrastructure
Many large Businesses
National Bus depot
Ooops Higher Fares in Town too!
I DON’T THINK THE TOON LADS ARE IN THE SAME PICKLE AS THE NT BOYS ARE THEY???????, WITH ALL THIS POTENTIAL!
Regards
Stephen

@Stephen (FKA Central Enth.),
stephen mate i hate to burst your bubble, but dont think 1st april means any changes, the berwick plated flimpers may be itching to have a crack on the ranks in morpeth, hexham etc etc,but they will have to wait a while longer, ive just renwed my plate in tynedale and when i asked licencing what plate would be on my car come 1st of april his reply was ‘tynedale’.NOTHING CHANGES! this applies to all the district councils, berwick will still answer to berwick council as i will to tynedale,we are all still tied to our licensing conditions, hack and ph will not become one system until at least january 2010,northumberland cc will consult, apparantly! with all hack and ph hire drivers and operators throughout the 7 district councils before coming to any conclusions on how to implement a new licensing system, this itself is not going to be easy as at least one of the districts have capped plates, another has vehicle age restrictions, then theres a fare structure to sort out, another idea being rumoured is that of dividing the county onto 3 communities, where a hack in one community cannot hack in one of the other communitys,so unfortunatley your problems are not going to dissapear on 1st april, and when this is eventually sorted these berwick hacks will last a couple of shifts up here in hexham and realise the job is knackered up here and will go running back to toon looking for a welcoming private hire office.

I understand where your coming from stephen But there’s probably more nt ph cars and the odd hack working in newcastle than there is in nt and the way I look at it (old school or not) if they want to work newcastle get a newcastle badge.
All I was trying to achieve with my article was some sort of union between the trade because as you will know newcastle hacks have newcastle meetings north tyneside hacks have north tyneside meetings and ph offices have ph meetings but nobody seems to be interested in the bigger picture and the fact that we are all strugling to make a lving and the LA’s don’t seem to be doing anything to help. They seem to be turning a blind eye to the out of town and ligiamate plated cars flimping in both areas they don’t seem to be bothered about the lack of rank spaces and the ridiculous number of cars working in both areas nor on they bothered about our familys suffering when we only come home with pittens again. with out getting into who is the poorist stepthen we must all unite because somthings got to give.
We all want rid of the out of town bandits.
We all want our overheads to come down.
we all want more pubs and clubs to give us a chance to make a nut.
we all want more rank spaces so we can all do our jobs.
we all want our LA’s to take notice of us rather than trying to brush us under the carpet.
we all need to lose weight and exrcising LOL.

@ stephen
Two large specialist Universities, meaning Med, Dentistry, Teaching and Nursing Schools that have Students all year round..who like their Beer. (and are serviced by a north tyneside office (Blueline) with free phones in most halls of residence and boasts of being the cheapest PH company which they are not as many newcastle offices are the same or cheaper)

Three very large Top Hospitals where Patients come from far and wide for Appts and treatment.(Also serviced by PH offices with free phones and ranks )

Newcastle United, Hmmm 52,000 fans wanting to go home on match day??, oh yes NT boys are the same eh? Whitley Bay FC, 200 Fans!!
(Be honest you think all 52000 use taxis if so how are roads blocked with thousands of private cars parked all around the ground and at the final whistle you cant get on a bus or metro for love nor money out of the town)

Eastcoast Mainline Train Station(serviced by hacks who pay about an extra £2400 a year on top of normal overheads for the poleasure with limited numbers ), oh yes we have North Shields Metro!

Various large Hotels (Most with a contract with a PH company many Blueline)

Smaller PH Offices than NT ( I dont think so Ace , Landsdowne and N.O.D.A probably all well in excess of 200 cars)

Jesmond one mile away…say no more (waiting ages for pi*s taking students for a whole £3.00 WOW!!)

Many large Businesses (with PH contracts again many with Blueline)

Dont get me wrong am not saying that north tynesides a wonderful place for taxis and PH, a mean if it was Blueline wouldn’t be operating in evrybody else’s area’s they would be able to sustain a living in there own bourgh!

@MB27

I agree with you we should all join together newcastle plated PH and hacks and defend our rights to make a decent living for our families !!!!

@Am 133,
Fair point, but that’s Newcastle’s Private Hire firms fault for having high fares, do you do your whole weeks shopping at a Corner Shop or do you go to the Supermarkert??, many people will choose a cheaper option, especially at the minute!
All I was saying that the Toon Lads are not as worse off as us, we have had just one Nightclub recently open, the other has re-opened, but that is about as much use as Berwick introducing a Test!!
North Tyneside is a big Borough, just to have one Club, and in the next few years we will not have a proper Hospital!, I still say their is a hell of a lot more going on in the Town.
And finally you want Drivers to stick together, and yet you are still making reference to Blueline, they have Toon lads and plenty of NT Drivers Hack and PH!
Regards
Stephen

@ Stephen
Sorry bud what a meant was all Newcastle PH/Hacks to unite instead of the them and us syndrome there is at the minute !
To be fair i can never see this happening because there are too many shi*ey ar*e’s in taxi’n it seems to be one for all and f*ck everyone else and thats how th LA’s walk all over us !

I really do sympathise with the northtyneside hack drivers and the lack of anything in North tyneside, i mean even all the supermarkets are serviced by PH companys and the ferry terminal by Blueline !

I really think a certain person would love to see the end of Northtyneside hacks and have you’s all working his office

As for high fares, the office i work is exactly the same as Blueline and all the smaller localised area office’s are running around on busfares reducing their minimum fares to try an encourage new trade !

I admit that there is office’s running around on expensive rates but many are on par with Bluline or cheaper !

Regards
Andrew

stephen,

firstly, the students now have much of there accomodation within a short walk of the city centre, everynght of the week you will see hordes walking in or out of the city. You only have to look at how many properties are for sale or rent in heaton to see the face of the surrounding city centre is changing, fast.

the quayside is pretty much doomed at the moment, drive past on a friday, and you will see more cars than people on the street. the biggmarket is heading that way, again at speed. the gate seems the busyiest spot, but trying to get near it for hacks is pretty much impossible.

Hospital work? when have you ever seen a hack ranking up at a hospital? I used to go to A&E after a friday and saturday night, if i wasnt tired, till the security gugard started to get people to wait inside and when a certain firm pulled up he would go in and get the customer. Do you think he was in someones pocket? Was that in his job description?

I believe theres around 47,000 going now to SJP. and yes steven they ALL get taxis, life is great! I wish. If the tonn are doing bad mate we do bad, most peoples pattern is get beat, get buss, go home and kick the dog! We are luckiy to get 2 jobs off the match these days, and days like the derby are a rarity!

TOURISTS!?! Stephen, i see people walking round using cameras looking all touristy, but they never use taxis mate, in fact i cant even remember the last time i went to the ferry with the norway lot! …

… and this brings me on to me next point, look around mate, hotels all over the city, lots within walking distance of shops, restaurants, bars etc etc, 5 years ago there was a shortage of hotels and not as amny in the city. times have changed.

so stephen it seems that we dont have it as rosey as you think, life in the city is tough as well, yes we do get more people in the city at weekends, but 800 hacks 1000 plus private hire and all the illegal help we get from gateshead, NT and the out of town lot, means we probably are not that better off. ohh and hoy in the odd parking ticket!

how much is the average rent over the coast? i would guess around £240/£250 in the city mate …
