As you’ll know if you were reading this website back in January Nokia’s Ovi Maps service now comes free of charge, and to celebrate that thrifty fact the firm has commissioned a fleet of free black cabs to patrol four of the UK’s major cities.

From today (26 May) and running for a week, if you spot a Nokia Ovi Maps branded taxi and flag it down it’ll take you on your journey for nothing. Nice.

Inside each cab you’ll find a Nokia X6 handset loaded with Ovi Maps software to try out – the idea being you can check your progress rather than have to listen to the usual enlightened political banter from the cabbie.

Nokia is also running a Twitter-based competition for the same week. From 9am today, just tweet the hashtag #NokiaFreeSatNav for a chance to win a 16GB Nokia X6 phone. There are five being given away every day.
