This is Great! They call this an ‘Initiative’  There are thousands of Taxi Drivers in this Country sitting on their arses, trying to scratch a living and the ‘Initiative’ is to create a F*$@ing  stupid course to add more Taxi drivers to the pile we already have! What Planet are these people from?
“I Know, I Know there are loads of unemployed people….We make them all Taxi Drivers…Problem solved…Recession over”
A NEW drive is under way to recruit Northumberland taxi drivers.
The Taxi Driver Route Way programme aims to help unemployed people access jobs as taxi and private hire drivers across the county.

The initiative, which includes vacancies in the Morpeth area, pulls together funding and expertise from a number of employment and training organisations, as well as local businesses and people who work in the field.

Northumberland College provides the training, the North East Employer Coalition co-ordinates the programme, as well as contributing funding, while Jobcentre Plus puts forward suitable participants.

Employment advice company A4E has also joined the partnership to offer ongoing support while clients apply for their taxi licences.

The course includes a BTEC qualification, a test in area specific general knowledge and help with necessary documentation, such as Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) checks.

Participants will be trained in health and safety, customer service, disability awareness and legal issues, offering benefits for both drivers and passengers.

And there is also an extra helping hand into work as people who successfully complete the programme are guaranteed an interview with a local taxi company.

Northumberland College Trainer Rod Russell said: “Since the coalition partnership started running this programme a few years ago it has continued to be successful and we are delighted to be able to roll it out in the Northumberland area now.

“We know from our research that there are vacant positions for taxi drivers in the North East and this programme allows us to help meet the needs of employers, as well as the unemployed.”

The scheme was first piloted in Whitley Bay in 2006 and was such a success that it was later rolled out to Teesside, Sunderland and Durham, helping more than 70 people into work.

It is considered an example of best practice, providing jobs for unemployed people and ensuring local companies have highly trained drivers, which they may not have been able to fund on their own.

The reputation of the scheme is even attracting interest further afield and the National Taxi Academy is planning to replicate it nationwide.

The coalition hopes to continue to provide further Back to Work taxi driver programmes in the region in the future.

@Edward Douglas, Do you really think any goverment really care about the taxi trade ?plus the way things are going with all the expected job losses think of all the extra money they will be getting from new taxi driver applications .so all these people with multiple plates will be in a win win situation by hiring out there vehicles to these new to the business drivers ,and using the rent they get from them to help buy more plates. just a thought .

@hacking jacket, I used to own my own plate now I rent one from the owners of this site, they pay for all repairs, road tax, test fees there even good if I’m a bit short of me bit.i’d never go back to the stress of owning my own. So can’t really see a problem with multi owners its done like that in most other countries.

this is typical idiot jobsworth thinking in this country.the kind of thinking that is ruining everything anyone has ever worked for.the people who take these courses will get the shock of their lives on becoming a taxi driver,no minimum wage here and plenty soul destroying hours waiting for work and then the fuel and rent will take mof what they have made….

i was ataxi driver for 23 years and believe me its no easy game now everything is against you. Taxi mot 300 pounds a year, maintainance anywhere btween 1000 t 2000 a year, insurance average 40 pound a week (RIP OFF),then of coarse theres good old fuel going on 5.00 t 5.50 a gallon.plus the 5% of rsole customers who wet themselves, shit in your cab, vomit in your back seat etc etc.dont think its 40hr week job try 60 or 70 at least.Yea you’ll make money but you’ll be to knackered to enjoy. No people are rich in this game exept the people called proprieters.one more thing.I’m not racist by any means but how can non european people get a taxi badge when they haven’t got a clue where there going thats got to be wrong.especially for women may lose safety conscience.being driven wrong way home and come on charging over the odds for the pleasure.thank you for giving me this opportunity to voice my opinion thanks retired x taxi driver thanks.

@kevin robson, I’m a taxi driver too and I agree with some of the things you say. These people you call Proprietors, do you mean the ones who only have one taxi? As you know they have overheads like the rest of the trade. The ones who really score in this game are the multiple plate owners, some of whom have in excess of twenty and sit back and just watch the money roll in. I’m not a racist either but think about it – some of the non-European drivers have found their way here across three continents so finding their way round a city should be a doddle.

Here’s a thought: what happened to ‘one man, one plate’? Why did the Council ever allow certain individuals to own so many plates and put the majority of the rest of us in hoc to them? One day soon the real truth about all of this will come out and people will be named and shamed and when the financial aspect of it is uncovered, hopefully prosecuted as well.
