In these increasingly environmentally-conscious times, car manufacturers across the world are working hard to come up with motors that run on more eco-friendly fuels.

As a response to the growing demand for greener cars, Mercedes brought us the electric-powered E-Cell supercar, BMW came up with hydrogen-fuelled 7 Series, and now we Brits have joined the green car club by giving the world the Bio-Bug – a converted Volkswagen Beetle powered by human poop.

Before you click away in disgust, we should explain that Bio-Bug is actually powered by the methane gas generated from human excrement, so its owners won’t have to endure the humiliation of shovelling their own poo into the converted Beetle in order to get it going in the morning. Whether or not it will give off a stomach-wrenching stench is a completely different matter altogether.

According to the Bio-Bug’s creator, sustainable business Geneco, it’ll also be ultra-efficient, with the “waste flushed down the toilets of just 70 UK homes being enough to power the Bio-Bug for a whole year, based on an annual mileage of 10,000 miles”.

“Previously the gas hasn’t been ‘clean’ enough to fuel motor vehicles without it affecting performance,” says Mohammed Saddiq of Geneco.

“However, through using the latest technology our Bio-Bug drives like any conventional car and what’s more it uses sustainable fuel,” he added.

As far as we’re concerned, the Bio-Bug is by far the most inventive idea for a car to come our way since the sweat-powered motor we stumbled across in 2008, so for that alone we’re going to give it the Orange Cars channel seal of approval. Geneco, we salute you!
