The oft (office of Fair trade)has this statement.
Cross border hiring
7.2 Taxis can take passengers from within their licensed area to other LAs but cannot accept bookings for passengers or ply for hire outside the area in which they are licensed.
This is obviously aimed at genuine Hackney carriages IAN.
7.2 cont. PHVs can take passengers from any point to any other providing the PHV driver, vehicle and operator are
licensed in the same area.
This is obviously aimed at Private hire IAN.
Now if you have a hackney carriage you can’t accept bookings or ply for hire outside the area in which you are licensed unless of course you are working out of area as a erm!! what are they called again erm!! Thats it!! A Private Hire Vehicle. So if the hackney carriage is working outside of it’s area as a private hire vehicle the surely that driver and vehicle would then be subject to the laws relating to the private hire industry.
Please correct me if I’m wrong as I’m genuinely interested.
Now on the subject of bursting bubbles.
Berwick council have a Specifications of Approved Roof Signs statement which Is given to all new applicants as part of their application pack. The statement mentions that all hackneys must have a roof sign. It then explains the exact specifications of the roof sign. Really it can’t be made any clearer.

Thats me well done(what give it away the photo of my car on walker taxis forcourt) and yes i sit there because many of my friends sit there , not to flimp but because most work for offices with some volume of work coming out the citycentre (ACE, ABC, LANSDOWNE) and your full of shit sayin i sat there when i worked at walker taxis because the bulk of walkers work is in walker(names a give away) !
If i was there in my time at walkers i had a job there or had a bit of travelling time to were my job was in town ! i will say cheese as i have **** all to hide , i am licensed by the city of newcastle upon tyne and work for an office that does most of there after midnight work in town, were do you want me to sit ????????

I myself work from a city centre office and know that to be queued in town that you don’t need to be sitting in a busy spot like right opposite Pizza hut at the top of the bigg market/grainger street when you could be sitting somewhere quieter and still be queued in town.

unfortunatly mate the trade is now full of idiots who’s badges are still wet yet they think they know what they are talking about in regards to the trade.
When me and You got licensed it was because we wanted to so tests weren’t an issue.
Now alot of drivers get a badge out of town because they couldn’t do out else and its been made easier than applying for a job thanks to certain money orientated people who have led the way threw the back door.
if anyone cares about the trade Name and Shame as much as you can and hopefully someone with some clowt will see it and take notice.
from a personal point of view, as a hackney driver, i much prefer to see these guys WITHOUT taxi topsigns, so they find it harder to pass themselves off as taxis.
however, I dont believe that was mr. shanks main interest here, i believe there are so many BLT without the top sign, as at first glance to BLT customers they would appear to be locally tested drivers and vehicles …

@andy warhol,I cannot speak for all,but the main reason that some of the berwick cars leave the topsign off is that they find it easier to find their fare without the hassle of people keep approaching them asking if they are free.This applies more so on a weekend when the city is jumping.

behind a cougar cabs (now blueline) mini bus today berwick plated h 1317 stuck in the back window nowt unusual there !!! but this plate was out of date aswell 28 02 2009 so how is it still on the road ???? and blt just took over cougar this week so must of been kitted out with data and stickers etc when the plate was out of date !!(investors in passenger saftey ha ha ha)

We are all adult in this trade and yes we do have different points of view but ‘sticks and stones’ comes to mind.
Anyone who visits the site regular will have noticed that I have a totaly different point of view to Ian Shanks and I don’t want the out of town plates but I wouldn’t turn vigalanty because of it.

could i also just say that IF mr. shanks had to go buy a top sign for each of these vehicles, would if make it such an attractive financial propersition then?
maybe i’m just still miffed that i pay £xxx’s more for having a red newcastle plate on the back of my vehicle, then a green berick plate!
although i do here that drivers ARE being asked when renewing where they are using the vehicle now, which begs the question, if they were already fully covered, why ask now?

What is the point of this list?
From my point of view I preffer these bandits having no topsigns on as it makes them look less like Taxi drivers to members of the public so making it harder for them to flimp our work.
But I think out of fairness if you are going to make any kind of list you should include drivers plated with ALL councils (Including Newcastle) who are working in the town, not just Berwick like all the Derwent plated cars with the wrong topsigns (supposed to have full length upright topsigns) and plates in back windows, Newcastle plated PH drivers with plates in back windows and topsigns that are too big for PH use (We all got letters from the council last year giving us maximum sizes and font specs etc), not forgetting the red Peugeot 406 estate with THREE topsigns on working for tyne taxis/Jesmond taxis.

The berwick plates are the biggest issue in the trade. They do what they want when they want they have no enforcement and seem to be above there by-laws.
Now be honest how many derwent plates are there in the town compared to berwick?
How many newcastle plates have their plates in their window and get away with it? None!!
How many new drivers do you see daily on the road because of berwick?
How much less are you making per shift now that the berwick plates are everywere?
How many other drivers on this site are shouting the same shout?
Have you ever looked at the name of this site?
Now have you self a think about WHY i’m writing the list which is going to newcastle licensing committee along with other bits and bobs.
You also mentioned FAIRNESS. do you think that berwick council used fairness when issuing plates???
Spotted two cars last night always sitting in the same place and would like you’s all to keep an eye out too.
One is a black passatt estate(Elite taxi’s gateshead phone number)hanging around mushroom and maccy d’s all night and the other was a gateshead hack white octavia(Felling taxi door stickers) hanging around the same area constantly.
I work for a Newcastle office and its very rare to get ya next job from were you have just picked up never mind every job from the same place !!!!!

That black elite taxi’s Passatt has been flimping the town for months. He sometimes also sits in the layby outside the Laing art gallery when Liquid is kicking out.

I am a Newcastle private hire driver and sat last night doing nothing as one after the other blueline cars pulled up and picked up just about every student in the toon !
The trade is well and truly fu**ed now (thanks mr shanks) i will be out of this sh*t as soon as my cars paid off (6months) thats if i can make the money to pay it off as every day gets sh**ter and sh**ter.
Ten hours for £60 less £15 diesel then divide the weeks running costs over 6 days i earned about £2.90 an hour fantastic wage for having no social live and causing strained relationships because you never see ya lass and kids !
Morrisons at West denton will be paying £7.24 an hour for nightshift shelve stackers its looking more and more tempting no greedy proprietors to pay cheaper car insurance next to no diesel costs and no wear and tear on the car ……………………..
