Five arrested after teen falls from taxi

FIVE people have been arrested after a teenager fell from a moving taxi in South Tyneside.

The 18-year-old was among a group of four or five teens who jumped from the black cab as it slowed to take a bend on Hedworth Lane, Jarrow.

It is believed he may have fractured his skull in the fall, which happened at around 3.45am on Sunday morning, and he is now in a critical but stable condition in hospital.

A 17-year-old, two 18-year-olds and a 19-year-old have arrested on suspicion of making-off without paying and bailed pending further enquiries.

A 60-year-old man has also been arrested and bailed on suspicion of dangerous driving.

Detective Inspector Paul Gilroy, who is investigating the incident, said: “A group of four-or-five youths had got into the taxi from a nightclub in South Shields to travel to Jarrow.

“When the taxi slowed to negotiate a bend on Hedworth Lane all the passengers alighted. from the taxi.

“However, one of the youths has apparently fallen and suffered head injuries.”
