People are being consulted over the establishment of new rules for taxi regulation in County Durham.

Currently rules differ across the area as the seven former district councils, replaced by a unitary authority in April, regulated the industry.

Durham County Council now wants to hear opinions on issues including new Hackney Carriage licensing zones and adopting a single colour for the fleet.

The authority hopes to make a decision on taxi policy next year.

Councillor Bob Young, portfolio holder for strategic environment and leisure, said: “This consultation has been carefully planned and thought through to make sure that all interested parties have their say and feel part of the decision making process.”

A postal questionnaire is to be sent out to residents during the process.
