An interesting insight on the subject of Taxi Deregulation. Published C.2005
Geoff Riley (Eton College) examines recent proposals to deregulate the UK taxi market
In recent weeks I have had to make more journeys than normal using a taxi. The flexibility that a taxi service provides is often greatly valued, particularly when you are chasing to catch a train or get home late at night.
Less appealing is the curse of sitting in the back of a cab watching the fare mount and wondering whether you have enough loose change to pay the fare!……….
The most likely outcome in the months and years ahead is a controlled expansion of the supply of taxi licences as demand in the industry continues to grow. Despite the strongly pro-competition leanings of the Office of Fair Trading, the government is keen to avoid some of the problems that might come from allowing complete deregulation of the market.
The taxi industry makes an important contribution to our transport sector, it is hugely important for millions of people at the start and end of countless journeys and although we might often feel we are being ripped off by high taxi fares, the fact that more and more people are willing to make these journeys says something about our revealed preferences and the true value that the services give to us at different and often anti-social hours of the day and night!

PLEASE READ ALL OF YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sorry Admin for sticking another post on here straight after another one, but I have spotted another potential Nail in the Coffin that has nowt to do with wor Dave!!!(Wilson)
Page 45 in tonights evening Chronicle displays a Ad “Home James”….why pay for TAXI FARES!, it’s potentially another bunch of Cowboys.
It’s one of them that Drive your Car with a unlicensed Vehicle that follows to take your car back home, then they come and get your when your finished your Beer!, they are charging £3.50 per mile, they call it a Tariff, but they are not a Taxi or PH.
Anyway they are opening on Decmeber the 11th.
The Website is http://www.HomeJamesUK.com, the Capitals are correct and not suppposed to be all small case!
More Cowboys??, sadly no Clint Eastwood to shoot them!!!.
The problem is there will be uninsured Copy Cat set ups, that will screw us if they are successful.
So if you get time Boys and Girls, legal Eagles, check out the website that I listed above!
Regards
Stephen

£3.00 Collection Fee plus

£2.00 Per Mile (atfer 12 miles)
£15.00 Minimum Fare (covers first 3.5 miles)
£2.00 Per 5 Minutes Waiting Time
works out about £21 from Newcastle to my house in Hadrian park! plus my fuel! or I could get Blue Line there and back cheaper? its never going to work
SC and North Tyneside Hack driver
I hope it does’nt work, I will annoyed that we are sitting around doing nowt and some Idiot wants to pay a unlicensed, Not CRB Checked person £6.50 for the first mile and min fair of £15 to get home!
My point was that we do not want opportunists in ordinary domestic Cars offering this service, remember we are tipping 3 million unemployed, and someone will be stupid enough to charge a £1 a mile, god only knows who this person could be!
Newcastle has a big problem with Boy Racers, sometimes you get them in South Parade, we don’t want Domestic Cars blocking the Streets!
Liquid in Town is a nightmare to get to, full of Renault Clios, Calibra’s and Subaru’s, you will never get to your pick up point if your had a fleet of unlicensed Mondeo’s waiting outside.
@Stephen Arthur,
Hello All,
On this subject matter of this Company please look at where it all started in Jersey.
Now Jersey is not covered by the Town Police Clauses Act 1847, the Public Health Act 1875, Section 171, or the 1889 Act, then there is the Local Government (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1976, now it may have escaped your attention, but we in England and Wales are governed under these Acts of Parliament outside London.
Now I stand to be corrected by all you lot out there, but I do not believe Jersey is governed by our Acts of Parliament, and therefore the Directors have clearly forgot about England and Wales having Acts of Parliament in place for our Country.
Lets just wait & see what Northumbria Police, Vosa, & Local Enforcement Officers decide to do tonight when the service is supposed to be launched as there website states, it all starts on 11th December 2009 & they are looking for “Franchisees” to subscribe, meaning they are just like the “Kerry Katona” company “Pink Ladies” and they broke the Law & were closed down very quickly.
This is just for debate & hopefully will settle down a few worried people.
Thanks
