Rogue taxi drivers caught in police sting op

BOGUS taxi drivers have been caught picking up city centre revellers in unlicensed cabs.

Five dodgy cabbies were banned from the streets of Newcastle when police and council officers teamed up to check scores of taxis on Saturday night.

Three of the drivers were suspended with immediate effect after their cars were found to have dangerous defects such as worn tyres, faulty lights and a split drive-shaft boot.

And two unlicensed drivers – people who were found to be operating as cabbies when they had no business to do so – now face prosecution.

The operation, codenamed Detour 5, also saw a number of drivers issued with official warnings, giving them five days to bring their cars up to scratch or further action would be taken.

Newcastle city centre neighbourhood beat manager PC Zoe Hingston, said the operation aimed to make sure that all taxis picking up customers in the city centre would get them home safely.

“During the operation, we found two people who were unlicensed but purporting to be taxi drivers and operating their vehicles as cabs,” she said. “People who do this are uninsured and potentially putting people’s lives at risk, and we just won’t tolerate it in Newcastle.”

Police stopped and checked a total of 76 taxis during the operation.

Of these, 38 were Newcastle Hackney carriages, 25 Newcastle private hire taxis and the remaining 13 were licensed by other authorities, namely Berwick, Northumberland, Durham and North Tyneside.

One private hire driver was reprimanded for picking up a fare without a booking.

And seven non-compliance notices were issued to drivers giving them five days to rectify defects.

Follow-up action will be taken with 10 private hire and six Hackney carriage owners, who were told to present insurance documents to the local authority.

Of the remaining 13 taxis from other authorities, six were found to be in contravention of required standards, with a number of vehicle information plates incorrectly displayed, together with lighting failures.

Northumbria Police also issued documents requiring drivers to present insurance details as well as issuing fixed penalty notices for those found to be exceeding the speed limit.

Operation Detour is a joint initiative between Northumbria Police’s City Centre Neighbourhood Policing Team and Newcastle City Council’s Taxi Licensing Department.

PC Hingston said: “This should act as a warning to others that these operations will continue and we will take action against unlicensed drivers. Not only are they putting the passengers at risk but they’re also taking business away from legitimate, hard-working taxi drivers in Newcastle.

“The public should be aware that a legitimate taxi is required to have a metal plate with licensing details fixed to the vehicle and the driver is required to have an identification card on display. They shouldn’t get into a taxi that doesn’t have these items.

“It should be reiterated that the vast majority of taxi drivers abide by the law, are reliable and trustworthy and offer a safe service to the public.

“It’s pivotal that people enjoying a night out get home safely, and operations such as this are targeted at the small percentage of drivers who are flouting regulations and road safety laws.”

Newcastle city council’s licensing manager Jonathan Bryce added: “We want Newcastle residents and visitors to the city to be confident and feel safe when they hail a taxi. Operations like this identify defects to our own fleet which require addressing as well as affording us the opportunity to stop and examine vehicles licensed outside the authority but operating in Newcastle. This has again proved very successful.”

BlueLines’ March Newsletter is worth a read, for those of you who have access to it.I would go so far as to say it makes better reading than Newcastle City’s Licensing Newsletter, which I am unable to publish here anymore as I will not pick up the phone and ask permission to republish a “Taxi Newsletter” on a “Taxi News Site”

@BLT Driver (not berwick), Flimping will always go on regardless of what type of licence the driver has!
Newcastle is the big partytime city at weekends thesedays and all and sundrie from other areas will always be prepared to take their chance, but beware of the penalty as police and enforcement are really clamping down.
Everyone seems hellbent on accusing berwick plates all the time but has any newcastle hacks noticed the amount of gateshead hacks and ph sniffing around lately?
Yep there is no work left in gateshead at nights so we see them trawling the town at weekends and sometimes reappearing back at the same club 3 or 4 times in one night??? hmm.
Rant over but eventually the cost to the flimper is a lot more than the fare was worth.

@smudger,Somebody out there must be taking notice because they’re going to do a proper purge this weekend. It’s not just vehicle checks either they’re carrying handheld barcode scanners so if anybody reading this has a naughty plate put a cork in it and mop your brow.

Who dares wins!

FREE BIT FOR A MONTH!

Shanksy’s offering a free radio for one whole month to the first driver who can give the correct number of cars working for him who are driving around on expired Berwick plates. (Rumoour has it that you only need to guess to the nearest dozen to qualify).

Good Luck.

FALSE ALARM….. We thought we had a possible winner for the ‘guess the number of expired Berwick plates still working competition’- a call came in from a Mr. D. Wilson of no fixed abode.

We were informed that he had access to inside information about these and therefore declined his offer and his fee of £2.00.

The competition is still open and don’t forget you only need to guess to the nearest dozen plates to win.

@The Mayor of Poland, I think the correct number is six hundred and sixty-six, but I have deducted two hundered and ninety that I found in a wheelie bin on Kenton Road because they aren’t actualy working as such.

I hope this makes sense as I am new to the taxi business and only have five plates myself at the moment.

Can someone remind the council that the taxi trade does not run from 9.00am – 5.00pm. They broke their necks to license all these cars without any adequate procedures in place to police them correctly and protect the public.

It is bad enough that they have not allowed enough rank space for our parking requirements but the complete lack of enforcement will be their undoing as we read more and more stories like the one below:

Police hunt taxi driver over sex assault
Apr 4 2010 By Alastair Craig

A TEENAGE girl has been subjected to a sickening sexual assault by the taxi driver she trusted to take her home.

Police say they are hunting a taxi driver following a sexual assault on a teenage girl over the Easter weekend.

The 17-year-old was attacked in the back of a taxi in the early hours of Sunday.

She had been after leaving Powerhouse nightclub in Westmorland Road, Newcastle, with a female friend.

The pair walked to a taxi rank and the victim hired what is believed to be a black taxi on her own.

Instead of taking her home the driver headed to a secluded location to attack her.

At the end of the journey in the area of Dukesway, Team Valley, in Gateshead, the girl was sexually assaulted.

Her alleged attacker then sped off and her left in the street.

The only description of the offender is that he was a dark skinned or Asian man over 30 years of age.

Police are appealing for witnesses or anyone who was in the area of the Powerhouse between 1am and 2am on Sunday.

They also want to hear from anyone who may have seen the girl walking around the Dukesway area.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Gateshead CID on 03456 043 043 ext 64310 or ring the independent charity Crimestoppers in confidence on 0800 555 111.

@jd, If this is true mate you should have taken his number and reported him straight to licensing.

I can’t believe you wouldn’t want to protect your own livelihood and that of the other legimate drivers, not to mention the public as well.

Wake up and smell the coffee.
