‘Bus lane’s not fine with me’ says taxi driver

A TAXI driver is warning other motorists to be careful where they drive through South Shields town centre.
Paul Garvock, from River Drive, South Shields, was fined £60 for driving down a stretch of Fowler Street designated as a bus-only lane.

But the 45-year-old driver does not think it is clear that drivers could get fined for being on the road – and doesn’t want them to be penalised like him.

Paul, a driver for Westoe Taxis, entered Fowler Street from Westoe Road at about 9.30am last Tuesday to take a customer to Albemarle Street.

But he said he wasn’t aware that between 5.30am and 11.30pm, only buses and cycles can use the stretch of road between Mount Terrace and Thomas Street, and that he should have taken a detour via Charlotte Terrace before joining the road again.
